MASSES vs OLIGARCHY; CHANGE vs STATUS QUO
By Manny Piñol

Over the last few days, people have been asking why photos and videos of the sea of humanity flooding the political rallies of Presidential frontrunner Rody Duterte which appeared in the social media have not been shown in the mainstream media, especially the giant television networks.

Over the last few weeks, as political alignments started to take shape, I have been repeatedly asked why only a few traditional political families have aligned themselves with Duterte.

Well, here is my answer people:

Check who owns the giant TV networks and the major media entities. You will find out that most of them actually own the big corporations with interests in energy, water, mining, telecommunications and power generation.

Check the political families, even those from Mindanao which is Duterte’s base, who have expressed support for Grace Poe, Jejomar Binay or Manuel Roxas III. Most of these families are tainted with issues of corruption and have enjoyed the perks and privileges of power and they are afraid to let go.

So, here is the explanation:

The 2016 Presidential Election is a classic match up between the Masses and the Oligarchy and between those who would like to maintain the Status Quo and those who cry for Change.

Come of think of this:

When Duterte declared that he would not accept financial contributions from persons or firms doing business with government and when he refused a huge amount from a telecommunications company, he was actually sending a message to the Oligarchy that he would not be beholden to Big Business.

When he said he would end Contractualization, an unfair labor practice where workers are hired through job agencies instead of by the companies themselves, he was actually telling businessmen to prepare for the levelling of the playing field between the rich and the poor.

The declaration could be likened to the attempt of Don Quixote to stop the Windmills with an old lance and riding on an emaciated and old horse.

Don Quixote’s old lance against the giant Windmills symbolises Duterte’s campaign hampered by lack of funds while the emaciated horse represents the people who are hungry and uncared for.
A political suicide? Maybe but this is the Duterte brand of politics. Maverick, independent and not beholden to anybody but the people.

The net effect of this unorthodox political character is a decision-making which is based on bringing about a greater good for the greater number. And the greater number would always be the MASSES.

Reckon this: Who bankrolls the presidential bids of Poe, Binay and Roxas?

Are the sponsors of the three other candidates pouring billions into their Presidential bids doing that out of the goodness of their hearts or because of noble intentions?

You know the answer: NO.

They want something in return and that something ranges from protection for their business interests or huge contracts from government.

On the other hand, the traditional political families who have declared support for Binay, Poe or Roxas have political interests to protect.

The last thing that they would like to see is a Presidential candidate with no record of corruption and who promises to end corruption in the country.

For them, corruption is part of politics and the thought of ending it scares them no end.
So do not be surprised if the big TV networks and media entities have not shown fondness for Duterte or if the established political families tarnished with corruption do not like him.

This is Big Business versus the Masses, Status Quo versus Change.

The decision on which side to take will be made on May 9, 2016.
